Here are a few personal tips for the area:

Bike Rentals. Bikes R Us.  Weekly Rentals are $35 for adult bikes and $25 for children’s bikes. They deliver and pick up for free!  They also provide bike chains and locks.  We highly recommend renting bikes because there’s a 6 mile bike path from our condo to the end of our road.  You can easily bike to various restaurants or just take a daily ride along the water. We do suggest you bring your own bike helmets from home but they do also have them available if you want to use theirs. (850) 837-6947 or (850) 502-6697

Outlet Mall.  When you go to the Silver Sands Outlet Mall, have your first stop be center kiosk near Off 5TH, Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet.  They have a booklet called the "passport book" that's full of all sorts of coupons for most of the stores. The coupon booklet costs $3.00 but is free with AARP, military or AAA card.

Deepsea. Fishing is great in Destin.  If the guys like deep sea fishing...this is a "must" for them. There are tons of boats that go out fishing daily. We recommend going down to the docks (which are to the west just before Okaloosa Island) and speak with a few different captains.

Sandestin’s Baytowne Wharf.  To get there, head east down 98.  Once you pass Silver Sands outlet mall it will be the first left.  Turn left into the gate and tell the guards you are going to Baytowne Wharf.   Baytowne Wharf a very quaint is a walking village that has a marina, shops and restaurants.  They also have free Wednesday night concerts in the park.  The marina has one of the best sunsets in all of Destin. www.baytownewharf.com/what_to_do.asp

Seaside. is a nice little village east down 98...watch for the signs, you'll take a right...Seaside is a very upscale area that's fun to go to "dream" about when you win the lottery...they have a bunch of artsy
shops...but things are very expensive...just a fun place to look  around.

Kayak and Yolo Boards.  A fun "cheap" thing to do is to rent the ocean Kayaks or Yolo boards off the beach, morning is usually the best time, the waters are generally calmer. The kayaks are very easy to maneuver and it's only around $15/hour.

Grocery Stores:  Publix is the main grocery store in the area.  Publix is known for their bakery and they have awesome made-to-order subs (the Boars Head Italian Sub is our Favorite).  To get there go to the west on 98 and it’s just passed the Bass Pro Shop on the north west side of intersection.

Fresh Market is another grocery store (organic foods—similar to Whole Foods).  To get there just go the same way you would as if you were going to Publix except go a little further down 98.  It is on the right in the same plaza as Marshall’s and Home Depot.

Walmart.  There are two of them which are equidistant from Maravilla.  The one to the west is larger but tends to be more crowded; the one to the east is smaller and less crowded.  To get there, just go to 98 and head west (left) to get to the large one or east (right) to get to the smaller one.  They are both about 5 miles down the road on the north side of the road—of course you cannot miss it; Walmarts are always well marked and visible from the road.

Fresh Seafood. If you want to cook up a seafood feast...my favorite store is called Shrimpers (850) 267-1159...to get there, go east on 98, past the outlet mall about 6 or 8 miles...it's on the left hand side, past Bayou Bill's...they have the freshest fish and shrimp and great prices...A local "specialty" is the smoked tuna dip...great on crackers as an appetizer...Also, if you can get your hands on "royal red shrimp" they're a must try!  Boil them in water for 1 1/2 MINUTES no more no less! and them dip them in drawn butter and you'll think it’s lobster...Shrimper's also has the "best" key lime pie around!

Destin Ice. There is also another seafood market to the east, right before Okaloosa Island, it is called Destin Ice, it is located on Hwy 98 to the west on the right, almost all the way down to the bridge to island.

Dollar Store. Dollar store on HWY 98 that has a lot of useful items all for $1.  It's a great place to pick up odds and ends along w/sand toys.  It's located west of the condo just passed the Home Depot on the right.

Dolphins.  Keep your eyes open if on the beach at dusk or dawn, we very often see dolphins swimming right off shore.  If the dolphins come in close, which they do occasionally, do not get in the water and try to touch them, it is illegal to touch the dolphins (we humans have germs that can harm the dolphins).
